What happens when a Malaysian learner driving licence (LDL) expires, how long JPJ allows renewal, and when you must restart the licensing process from the theory test.
How the LDL works
The LDL is the middle step of Malaysia's licensing path: pass the KPP computerised theory test, obtain the LDL, complete your driving-school hours, then sit the practical (JPJ) test to earn a probationary licence (PDL).
An LDL is issued for a short fixed period and is renewable at a JPJ office or through your driving institute while it is still within the permitted window.
Expired under two years vs over two years
If your LDL has lapsed but the gap is still within JPJ's renewal window, you can renew it and continue to the practical test without repeating the theory stage.
Once an LDL has been expired for more than two years, JPJ treats the process as lapsed: the LDL cannot be revived, and you begin again from the KPP theory test as a new candidate. Budget for the theory test, a fresh LDL, and driving-school hours before the practical.
After you pass: driving beyond Malaysia
