An International Driving Permit (often searched as an “international driver's license”) is a multilingual translation of your national driving licence, standardised by the United Nations road-traffic conventions of 1949 (Geneva) and 1968 (Vienna). It does not replace your licence — it travels with it, so a rental agent in Tokyo or a police officer in Rome can read your credentials in their own language.
