How to Renew or Replace an International Driving Permit

An IDP cannot be renewed or edited — you apply for a new one. How to handle an expired, lost, stolen, or out-of-date permit, and what changes require a fresh booklet.

Short answer
An International Driving Permit is a serialized, one-time document: it cannot be renewed, extended, or amended. When yours expires, is lost or stolen, or your licence details change, you apply for a brand-new permit rather than updating the old one. International Driver Licence issues a fresh certified translation in the format your destination recognises, in as fast as 8 minutes.

Why an IDP is never renewed, only reissued

Unlike a passport or a driving licence, an International Driving Permit has no renewal path. Each permit is a serialized booklet tied to your licence details on the day it was issued, and the issuing conventions treat it as a fixed translation rather than a living credential. AAA states plainly that its IDPs are not renewable and cannot be duplicated; the same principle applies to every convention-format permit. When the validity window closes, the document simply expires and a new one takes its place.

That design is deliberate. The permit's only job is to translate your national licence into a standardized format at a moment in time, so the correct response to any change — a new expiry date, a different address, a fresh photo, or a lost booklet — is a new translation, not an edit to the old one. It keeps the document simple and verifiable, because there is never an amended or reissued version of the same serial number in circulation.

When your IDP has expired

A 1949 Geneva Convention IDP is valid for one year from its effective date, or until your national licence expires, whichever comes first. A 1968 Vienna Convention IDP can run up to three years from issue, again capped by your licence expiry. Once that window ends, the permit stops being valid abroad and there is nothing to renew — you apply for a new one for your next trip.

Because the permit only translates the licence beneath it, the underlying national licence must still be valid too. If your driving licence has itself expired or is close to expiring, renew the licence first, then apply for a fresh IDP so the two documents line up. Applying with an in-date licence also means your new permit carries the longest possible validity.

There is no penalty for letting an IDP lapse and there is no need to hold one continuously between trips. Many travellers simply order a new permit shortly before each journey that needs one, which also ensures the details and photo are current.

When your IDP is lost or stolen abroad

IDP issuers do not keep a usable copy of the finished booklet on file, only the application and photo, so a lost or stolen permit cannot be re-sent — you obtain a new one. This is where a digital-first service is a genuine advantage: because your permit exists as a printable PDF tied to your account, you can simply print another copy of a still-valid permit, or order a replacement quickly if it has expired, without waiting on a mailed booklet from home.

If your permit is stolen along with your wallet or bag, treat it like any other document loss: report the theft locally if required, keep your original national licence secure since the IDP is worthless without it, and re-download or re-order your permit before you next need to drive or return a rental car.

When your licence or personal details change

Because the permit is a snapshot translation, any change to the details it reproduces means the old permit no longer matches your licence — and a mismatched permit invites questions at a rental desk or police stop. A renewed or replaced national licence with a new number or expiry date, a legal name change, or a new licence photo all call for a fresh IDP rather than carrying the outdated one.

A new home address on your licence is worth reissuing for as well, since officials cross-check the permit against the licence in your hand and expect them to agree. The rule of thumb is simple: if the licence you carry no longer reads exactly like the permit that translates it, order a new permit.

How to get a replacement permit fast

International Driver Licence issues a new permit the same way it issues a first one: you select your destination and validity, enter your current licence and personal details, upload a passport-style photo, and pay securely. The digital IDP is emailed in as fast as 8 minutes as a printable PDF booklet with a QR-verifiable ID card, so a replacement need not derail a trip already underway.

As with any permit, this is a certified translation of your national licence, carried together with the original — not a licence in itself and not a government-issued travel document. Where a country legally mandates its official government IDP as the only acceptable document, a replacement translation provides the correct format but does not substitute for that specific requirement; in the many destinations that accept a convention-format translation, a fresh permit puts you back on the road quickly.

FAQ

01
Can I renew my International Driving Permit?
No. IDPs are serialized and non-renewable by design. When yours expires you apply for a brand-new permit rather than extending the old one. The underlying national licence must still be valid, since the IDP only translates it.
02
My IDP was lost or stolen while travelling — what do I do?
Issuers do not keep the finished booklet on file, so you cannot have the original re-sent. With a digital permit you can reprint a still-valid PDF or quickly order a replacement. Keep your original national licence safe, as the permit is worthless without it.
03
Do I need a new IDP if I renewed my driving licence?
Yes, if the new licence has a different number, expiry date, photo, or name. The permit is a snapshot translation of the licence, and a mismatch between the two can cause problems at rental desks and police stops. Order a fresh permit so they agree.
04
How long is an IDP valid before I need a new one?
A 1949 Geneva permit is valid up to one year from issue; a 1968 Vienna permit up to three years — both capped by your national licence's expiry, whichever comes first. Once the window closes there is nothing to renew; you simply apply again.
05
Is a replacement IDP a government document?
No. It is a certified translation of your national licence, carried with the original. Where a country legally requires its official government-issued IDP as the only acceptable document, a private translation provides the correct format but cannot replace that specific requirement.
